champions leagueTuesday night was the first night of match day 4 in the UEFA Champions League. The night started out with Astana hosting Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid. After thrashing them an astounding 4-0 in Madrid two weeks back, Diego Simeone’s men just couldn’t cracking down a rather spirit Astana side and that saw the match end in goalless draw. Manchester City displayed a first class first half performance to qualify for the knock out stages of the competition with a 3-1 victory over Sevilla. The Premier League club had to wait till the dying minutes to grab a winner the last time the two met but the case was different this time as the tie was decided in the first half with goals from Raheem Sterling, Fernandinho and Wilfred Bony was enough to give them a deserved win.

Wayne Rooney ended what could have been a third straight goalless draw for the red devils with a header in the 79 minute at Old Trafford. The coach’s trust in his captain finally paid off when the England international nodded in from close range to give Manchester United a 1-0 victory over a rather defensive CSKA Moscow. The game between Real Madrid and French champions PSG was also decided in the first half. The only goal came from the substitute Nacho Fernández who had come on to replace Marcelo as the later could not seem to shake off the injury he picked up. PSG playmaker Marco Veratti was also taken off in the early minutes of the game due to an injury.

The biggest winners of the night were Shaktar Donetsk who thrashed Malton an astounding 4-0. The first came in the first half with the remaining three coming in the second half. Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw against Borrusia M’Gladbach while PSV pulled a surprised 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg. Benfica also got a 2-1 victory over Galatasaray on the night. The events of match day 4 continues tomorrow and some of the teams would join City and Madrid in qualifying for the next round.

This weekend was nervy as the first match was a vital one for the teams involved. It was the staggering Chelsea FC vs Rejuvenating Liverpool. As much as the crucial match was a vital time for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea to turn things around for themselves, it was also Liverpoool’s chance to show that their new coach was making progress with the team.

Chelsea vs Liverpool

With just four minutes into the match, Brazilian midfielder Ramires headed Chelsea into the lead following a cross from left back Azplicueta. Liverpool didn’t back down from this, they kept pushing for a goal which finally came in the dying period of the first half from Coutinho. He added to his tally to make it 2-1 in the second half before Benteke ended any hopes for Chelsea with a third goal.

Crystal Palace vs Manchester United

United headed into this fixture with two draws in their last two fixtures without goals. The red devils were hoping to change their fortune with this game but it was Crystal Palace who had the better chances of the game and United were sure lucky to have escape with a draw.

Swansea City vs Arsenal.

Although beaten in the midweek by Sheffield United, Arsene Wenger so men showed their title race wasn’t affected by their cup loss. The game started out quite balanced with both teams having equal shares of the ball but the swans were lacking in their final touches. Oliver Giroud broke the deadlock for the gunners in the 49th minute of the game and then a controversial Koscielny goal and one from Campbell gave them a deserved 3-0 victory.

Elsewhere, Manchester City needed a penalty to restore their lead in the 86th minute of the game after Norwich City had drawn level. Leicester City came from behind to beat West Bromwich 3-2 while Newcastle had a goalless draw with Stoke City. Newly promoted side, Watford got a 2-0 victory over West Ham and that ended the day in the Premier League today.

Manchester-United-v-Middlesbrough-Capital-One-Cup-Fourth-RoundManchester United were the next big team in England to be eliminated from the league cup after their game against second division Middlesbrough ended in a goalless draw. Louis van Gaal’s men were left to rue missed chances in the game were they should have scored and won the game. After ending up in a draw, the game proceeded to a penalty shoot out as is customary in the competition. Sensational signing Anthony Martial and Maroune Fellaini had the chance to win the game for red devils in the extra time of the game but we’re not able to convert their chances to goals for the team.

It’s seemed like Middlesbrough had United in their web as they were very clinical in the shoot out. United captain and fellow England team mates Ashley Young and Michael Carrick failed all failed to convert from the penalty spot. While Manchester United were having a bad night out, city rivals Manchester City who have not had any scarce supply of goals so far this season were at it again in a six goals thriller that saw them win 5-1. Liverpool also won their game, holding onto a first half goal from Nathaniel Clyne. Brazilian summer signing Roberto Firminho put up a stunning performance for the reds and his coach was full of praise for the midfielder during the post match conference.

rooney

Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has come under the spotlight again as the team drew at home to city on Sunday. Rooney has been picked out by the fans and media for his failing performances this season. he has failed to consistently find the net even when presented with such opportunities. Against former team Everton last weekend it took three one-on-one chances before the striker could convert, giving him a conversion rate of 33% and that’s very low for a player like Rooney. United manager, Louis van Gaal has always backed the player stating that he believes the striker would hit form soon enough but the case was different after the derby yesterday. when asked about Rooney’s performances on the pitch, the manager said he was tired of answering questions concerning the English captain.

While Rooney has been finding it difficult to find the net, the exact opposite could be said about 19 year old summer spending Anthony Martial. Even though the player has been subjected to supporting roles for United so far he has never failed to deliver and that showed against city yesterday. It could be said that Martial is the only Manchester United player that was a constant threat in the match. City on the other hand had their own fault as their most creative player on the pitch was made to attack from the wing.

Considering Rooney’s performance, it is only fair that Anthony Martial be given a chance at the striking role because of his high conversion rates as we have seen. It is still unknown whether that is an option the dutch coach would be willing to accept but United’s inability to finish off games would go a long way in affecting their title campaign if not handled earl enough.

Would Chelsea continue their path to redemption, would arsenal top the league for a few hours and who would win the Manchester derby, those were questions we all wanted to be answered this weekend. Well we got the all the answers just in time.

Arsenal continued their winning streak in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Everton at the Emirates stadium on Saturday while Liverpool and Southampton shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Vardy was the man again as he scored the only goal for Leicester City in their win over Crystal Palace, the goal makes him the top scorer in the Premier League with 10 goals in 10 matches for Leicester City. Andrew Ayew completed Swansea’s comeback against Aston Villa after going down by one goal thanks to a goal from his brother Jordan Ayew.

Tottenham Hotspur were the highest winners in the Premier League in match day 10 with a 5-1 victory over newly promoted side Bournemouth. Sunderland also got a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United while new promoted side Watford got a sweet 2-0 victory over Stoke City.

The Manchester derby which was scheduled for sunday ended up in goalless stalemate and there has been suggestions that this has been the worst ever derby in a long time.

The European Champions League was back in action with a lot of expectations from fans around the world. With lots of Europe’s elite teams going head to head it was sure to be an eye catching encounter in the match day 3 of the competition.

Barcelona were away against BATE club and it required the magic of croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic to break the deadlock for the team. He was in terrific form scoring two goals as they ran out winners in the game that ended 2-0. Bayern Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno was to blame as the team drew 4-4. Arsenal hosted Bayern Munich at the Emirates stadium and although they did go into the match as the underdogs they came on top with goals from Oliver Giroud and Mesut Ozil. Elsewhere in group F Olympiakos got a goal over Dinamo Zagreb which meant Arsene Wenger’s team remain bottom of the table.

After a 2-0 win over West Ham this weekend, Chelsea couldn’t muster much against Dynamo Kiev in Sweden and they shared the spoils in a goalless draw. Hulk continued his scintillating form for Zenit as they trashed Olympique Lyon 3-1, this means the Russian team has now won all three of their Champions League matches. PSG stars were below par against a weak Madrid team with the later having the better chances of the game though they couldn’t covert it to goals. Anthony Martial scored his first Champions League goal sparing the blushes for team captain Wayne Rooney who had missed a couple of chances to put the team ahead. The young french striker made up for his errors that gave CSKA Moscow the lead after conceding a penalty with a hand ball. Athletico Madrid were the highest winners beating Astana 4-0 while Manchester City got a 2-1 victory over Sevilla. This match day made a change to the fact that the big teams smash their way past through the group stages, now they have to work to earn it.

imagesArsenal coach, Arsene Wenger is hoping that his team would continue their good form as they welcome FC Bayern to the Emirates stadium tomorrow. A win against Bayern is also vital if they are to move forward from the group stage. They have so far lost their last two matches meaning they are in the knife edge and anything less than a win tomorrow might be the end of their Champions League campaign this season. Arsenal have been in good form in the Premier League this season. Their last three scores have been 5-3 against Leicester City, 3-0 against Manchester United and 3-0 against Watford last weekend. Arsenal fans would be hoping their star player Alexis Sanchez would lead the pack to a victory.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich have kept a 100% win record this season. Last weekend they set a new Bundesliga after winning 9 out 9 matches since the start of the season. Lewandowski has been on great scoring form for both club and country. Bayern in the process have knocked aside the likes of Borrusia Dortmund and Wolfsburg who their only Bundesliga contenteders.

Both Wenger and guardiola would have to go back to the drawing table as this game looks like one that would be won by the books.

premier leagueA lot was expected as all the leagues returned to action following the long international break but the Premier League just had so much going on for it. Chelsea were expected to have gotten the break needed to get them back to winning ways, Liverpool fans couldn’t wait to see the effects of their new coach, Arsenal longed to see their good run continue and Manchester United just wanted to be over their heavy lose at the Emirates.

Chelsea seemed to have found their rhythm in the absence of their main talisman Eden Hazard as they capitalised on Aston Villa’s defensive errors to win the game by 2 goals to nil. Manchester City were on fire, thrashing AC Bournemouth 5-1 with Raheem Sterling scoring three of those goals. Meanwhile United got the better of the game at Goodison park by winning 3-0, captain Wayne Rooney rounded off the scoring when he picked up a superb pass from Ander Herrera and lifted the ball over the on rushing keeper. Liverpool played harder, faster and with more enthusiasm but ended up sharing the spoils at White Hart Lane.

Southampton gave away a two goal lead as Vardy lead Leicester City to a great comeback to draw level with the second goal coming-in in the 90th minute. Late goals from Lazzini and Payet helped West Ham secure a vital win over Crystal Palace. Hot sensation Alexis Sanchez lead the rout as Arsenal came in strong in the second half to win newly promoted side Watford. Berahino was the man to burst Sunderland’s bubble as faced West Bromwich later in the day.

Earlier today, Wijnaldum scored a staggering four goals as Newcastle trashed Norwich City at St James Park. The Netherlands international scored twice in both halves of the game. And that leaves us with the last match of this round, which is Swansea vs Stoke City and that would be played tomorrow night.

Anthony Martial made player of the month

Anthony Martial made player of the month

New Manchester United signing, Anthony Martial has been named as the Barclays player of the month for September. The French striker joined United from Monaco for a staggering £36 million but has since proven himself to be the real deal for United. On his debut for the club, Anthony Martial came off the bench and scored a wonderful goal at the strentford end against arch rivals Liverpool and since then he has continued his good form for the club. He also scored a brace against South Hampton overturning the deficit for the club before fellow United player Juan Mata rounded off the scoring in that match. The young striker beat fellow united team mate Daley Blind, Hugo Lloris and a host of other players to the award

Martial deserves this award following his stellar performance which he has further extended to country football. He always looked likely to score whenever he was on the ball in France’s euro qualification match against Denmark during the midweek. Martial was virtually unknown before his big money move to old trafford. The United board were even criticised by the media for spending such an amount for a player who was bring nothing but potential to the team but the french player quickly proved that he was worth every penny with his two performances.

Although Martial did win the Barclays player of the month, Juan Matt was the one who was voted by United fans for the club’s player of the month. He returns to action tomorrow as United travel to goodisoon park to face Everton.

alex-ferguson_2339779kFormer Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Fergus on has revealed the announcing that he would retire at the end of the season in 2001 was his biggest mistake. Sir Alex Ferguson had planned to retire from coaching at the end of the 2001/2002 season, a decision which he made public. He has claimed that the announcement had drastic effects on his coaching staff and players. According to him, he changed his mind in January after seeing that the club still needed him very much. Sir Alex Ferguson later went on to become Manchester United’s longest serving coach And later retired in the 2013.

During his 26 years reign at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson won a staggering 38 trophies including trebles at some point in his career. After his departure there was a lot of debate about who was going to fill the shoes and the plan. Then came David Moyes, who left Everton to take over United. David Moyes came to the club with a good plan lasted only 10 months as United lost out on a Champions league spot that season because they finished seventh on the table.

After the 2014 world cup, Manchester United hire former Netherlands, Barcelona and Ajax manager Louis van Gaal. He helped the club back to wining ways and secured a place in the champions league. But that’s not enough as the club has spent so much during the transfer market to have a squad like what they currently have.
